As the southernmost country in Central America, Panama connects North and South America. Here the land between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific narrows to a width of 54 kilometers. The country is predominantly mountainous and heavily forested. In the north and east towards the Colombian border with tropical rain forest, on the Pacific coast with dry forest and savannah.
